What can we learn from Salmon?

Earlier this summer, I returned from a trip to Alaska. I can honestly say that I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I’m not the most outdoorsy person, and I hadn’t fished since I was probably 12 and remembered it being boring. That being said, I totally get the draw to Alaska… it was freaking gorgeous, and I entered and ended each day with new experiences and aspects to be grateful for. One thing we were upset about was not catching any salmon, BUT one of the coolest things I learned about and was able to witness was the salmon migration. We hiked up to the Russian River, where we were able to see this incredible natural phenomenon in action. It truly left me in awe and made me think about the invaluable lessons we can learn from it.

If you’re like me and had no idea about the salmon migration, I’m about to explain it. If you’re a salmon migration expert and want to proofread my explanation, please know that I welcome and look forward to any corrections. These salmon are born in freshwater rivers and streams and then navigate to the saltwater oceans, where they have more options for food and growth. They spend a few years out in the ocean eating, gaining strength and size, and preparing their bodies for what’s ahead. When it’s time to breed, these same salmon navigate their way back to the freshwater rivers or streams where they were born! This is a safer environment for breeding but doesn’t provide a lot of food or space for growth for the salmon to continue its life. So, some morbid stuff happens next, AND the salmon is prepared for this and has honored its life cycle and purpose. So, what can we learn from this really cool and (morbidly) beautiful phenomenon? Let me share my thoughts…

  1. Determination and resilience. The salmon’s journey from the ocean back to the freshwater rivers and streams where they were born is nothing short of extraordinary. They show unwavering determination and resilience as they face countless challenges and obstacles, including treacherous rapids (I definitely would NOT want to be rafting down them, let alone swimming against them), hungry predators (like well-skilled bears and hopeful fisherpeople), waterfalls, and rocks. Similarly, in our own lives, it’s essential to develop strength and persevere through our challenges and obstacles. We must understand that they are part of the path to growth and expansion, and having purpose, determination, and resilience will continue to be driving forces against all odds.

  2. Embracing change. The salmon migration is a beautiful reminder of the necessity of change and adaptation. These fish adapt and evolve throughout their life cycle as they transition from freshwater to saltwater and back again. Change can be really intimidating, and it also isn’t inherently BAD or make anything worse. Embracing change and viewing it as an opportunity for growth and self-improvement allows us to navigate life’s currents with grace, resilience, and confidence.

  3. Building and nurturing foundations. Again, the salmon journey into different bodies of water in order to best support what they need. These bodies of water provide the essential nourishment and support needed for their growth, survival, and purpose. In our own lives, it's crucial to identify and nurture the foundations that sustain our overall well-being, whether it's our relationships, self-care practices, or a strong support network. By prioritizing these essential elements, we can thrive in our personal journeys.

  4. Collaborative Spirit: Witnessing the salmon migration reminds us of the power of collaboration and community. These fish often swim in synchronized groups, supporting and guiding each other through the challenges they face. As individuals, we can learn from their example and foster a sense of unity and collaboration in our own lives. By seeking support, sharing knowledge, and uplifting others, we create a collective strength that propels us toward success.

  5. Appreciate the journey. You’ve heard that it’s about the journey, not the destination. Well, the salmon's migration is a testament to the beauty of the journey itself. They face incredible odds and endure long and difficult voyages to fulfill their purpose. Likewise, in our pursuit of our strongest body and strongest mind, it's important to embrace the present moment and celebrate the lessons and experiences along the way. By cultivating gratitude and mindfulness, we can find happiness and fulfillment in the journey itself.

I never thought I’d learn so much from watching fish, but here we are. I encourage you to take moments to connect with the world around you and be open to the lessons and inspiration that it has to give. This is a lesson I’m continually learning and growing from!
